Starting the Freeze organization over 13 years ago was a huge undertaking. We began with one Peewee B team, 10 skaters and 1 goalie. We did not have a home rink for our first 6 months. In March of 2004, Aspen Ice at Randolph opened its doors and we have been proud to call the rink our home since then.
We knew that growing our program would be extremely difficult. There were several established and successful clubs in the region. Northern New Jersey is a very competitive area for club hockey. As we have grown over the years we have kept our focus on our key objectives.
– We strive to create the best environment to learn and play the sport
– We want each player to reach their maximum potential in the sport
– We want to be a positive influence on every player
– We want the players to look back on their experience with fond memories
A new organization judges its success on how well it does against the best in the industry. When we began, the New Jersey Colonials were one of the best clubs in the Atlantic District of USA Hockey (AAHA). They are also our main geographic rival. The Colonials have been in existence for over 45 years and have a long history of success. We knew that if we wanted to become a top tier organization in the AAHA, we needed to compete with the Colonials.
Our first 5 years were extremely difficult. There were many games where we failed to compete and were often beaten by 10 or more goals. Winning is not one of our main objectives but no one wants to lose week after week. Winning is still important. In 2009, the tide began to turn. At the 16U and 18U levels we began to see success in the win and loss columns. Our teams won tournaments, qualified for league playoffs and advanced to the USA Hockey National Tournament.
We continued to make inroads over the next five years and are now one of the top clubs in the Atlantic District. Freeze Teams have won over 60 tournaments, 20 NJYHL Division Championships and 5 Atlantic District Championships. This season was the best since our inception. We had teams compete in every Division, qualified for postseason play at 7 levels, had a team win the AAHA District Tournament and had a team advance to the USA Hockey National Tournament. In addition, our Frozen Tide, Peewee AA and Bantam AA teams competed at and won “Tier-1” Tournaments throughout New England. To date, 15 former Freeze/Frozen Tide players have committed to NCAA Division I colleges.
So how do we fare against our geographic rival now? Below is the head to head comparison from the 2016-2017 season.
Today, we skate 25 teams in three different leagues. We provide the opportunity for over 400 players, of various skill levels, to play and enjoy the game of hockey. We continue to focus on our objectives and grow our Freeze and Frozen Tide brands.
Thank you to all the players, coaches and families that have made our organization such a great success.
